Peel Free is a work that took over 12 years to complete. The work documents a process of healing.
From an early age, Eva Michielin was at home with colours. As colourful and as large as possible, her mother had to shower her every evening – covered in paint and smeared with colours: her greatest happiness. With the abuse, the colours faded and she stopped painting.
Then, in 2012, she took her first artistic step again: bathed entirely in red and orange, the artist takes to the canvas. Over the years, she repeatedly works on the ‘open wound’ she creates with new layers. Like a snake, she sheds her skin again and again. The many layers of gold and green tones, scales and pigments cause the red-orange to disappear over the years.
